About

Island of the Blue Dolphins CoverIsland of the Blue Dolphins is a children’s book written by Scott O’Dell, published in 1960. In 1961, during the book’s first year, it won the Newbery Medal.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is based on a true story of an Native-American woman named Juana Maria, who was marooned on the island of San Nicolas, just off California’s coast, for 18 years.

Similar to Juana Maria, Karana (the main character) is marooned in a Robinson Crusoe like manner, but not because of a shipwreck. When the rest of her tribe was evacuating the island they lived on, she jumped off the boat because her brother was left behind, and who later dies leaving Karana alone on the island.
